Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
