Nepal's Political Landscape Witnesses Significant Alliance Forged By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The September revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Discussions Underway

In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several major political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
