Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology This Season.

The Championships court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the right to challenge particular rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
